The General Council of the Spanish Judiciary has increased the number of commercial courts with specialist jurisdiction in industrial property in line with article 118 of the Spanish Patent Act. The Permanent Commission’s decision attributes jurisdiction to the Granada Commercial Court, to two commercial courts in Las Palmas, to two other courts in A Coruña, and to Commercial Court No. 2 of Bilbao.

Until now, there were only commercial courts specializing in industrial property in the autonomous regions of Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia. With the new attribution of jurisdiction, which will come into force on January 1, 2019, both the number of specialist courts and their geographic distribution will be extended, seeking to combine the principles of proximity and de-centralization with that of specialization.
